Subject: Dell Dimension 4600 Memory Ram Upgrade
Hi there, I wanted to add some more memory RAM to upgrade my Dell Dimension 4600. I thought of getting 2GB all up. Would this mean that I would have to throw out the 512MB that is already in there and buy 2 separate 1GB's memory modules? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Reply by Admin:
If your machine has a total of 4 memory expansion slots, you can simply keep the existing memory modules, and install new 1GB memory ram modules in to the next 2 available memory slots. Just buy two 1GB ram modules and install them in the first two memory slots and install the other existing modules in slots 3 and 4. If you have only 2 memory slots available for installation, then you will have to remove the existing memory modules already there, and install two 1GB memory modules. The dell dimension 4600 specifications shows that it has total of 4 memory slots available for installing memory modules.

Subject: upgrading memory
I have a Dell Inspirion 530 with 3GB RAM. It is broken down as 2 - 1 GB sticks and 2 - 512 sticks. I purchased 2 more 1 GB memory sticks and removed the 2 - 512 memory sticks. Now I have 4GB RAM. When I look at my system properties it says I have 4GB RAM but only 3.25 usable. I never noticed what it was earlier. I noticed after i installed the new RAM. Is the 3 quarters missing being used by the operating system? I am running Window 7 32-bit
By Admin:
This is pretty common thing that windows will only report 3.5 GB of RAM when 4GB is installed, the other memory address space is used by the OS, by using a 64Bit version of the OS will be able to use more than 4GB.

@William
Dell XPS 730 desktop computer accepts memory types: DDR3-1066, PC3-8500, 240PIN, NON-ECC, NON-REGISTERED, DDR3 DIMM AND DDR3-1333, PC3-10666, 240PIN, NON-ECC, NON-REGISTERED, DDR3 DIMM. You can buy any one type of the two because both types are compatible. I will recommend you not to mix two types.
